Same-Gender Adoption essays Imagine youre a couple, deeply in love, committed to each other for life and desperately wanting children, only you cant have any. Why? Not because of what the average person might think. Its because youre a gay or lesbian couple, or, as many that are of the persuasion prefer to call it, same-gender couple. In todays world, where we are considered to be in an enlightened society, same-gender couples not only encounter the usual barriers because they want to be together, but its even worse when trying to fulfill their dreams of having children. There are legal issues surrounding same-gender adoption, as well as moral issues. With so many children looking for loving parents throughout the world, one might ask why NOT allow same-gender couples to adopt them. In an article written by Sean Cahill, all of the candidates for President in 2000 were asked where they stood on this issue. George W. Bush opposes gay men and lesbians serving as adoptive parents. When he was governor of Texas, he supported a bill which would bar gays and lesbians from adopting. He is quoted as saying Im against gay adoptions. I believe children ought to be adopted in families with a woman and a man who are married. Society ought to aim for the ideal, and the ideal is for a man and woman to adopt children (Cahill 25-26). In this same article, Al Gore states: We have a huge number of children who cannot find adoptive parents. Local adoption officials can evaluate the circumstances of the child and the parenting ability of prospective parents and decide if theres a good match. Gores spokesperson said that the vice president would leave gay adoptions up to adoption professionals on an individual basis (26).
